Our strawberry fields are open to the public each June. We spend the entire year caring for our strawberry plants to provide only the biggest and best berries for you! When the days start getting warm in the Spring, we're busy raking the straw off the berry plants. The plants need room to grow and reach out for the sun. If there is any mention of a late frost in the weather report, it's time to haul out the row covers. These are thin sheets of cloth about 50' wide that we hurry to place over any plants that have blossoms. The row covers protect the plants from the overnight frost and are removed the next day. Many strawberry farms use their overhead irrigation systems to protect the plants. Here at Meuer Farm, we use an underground irrigation system so the row covers just make sense.
In May the blossoms start appearing on the plants and about 30 days later the fruits start to appear. We're busy most days pulling weeds. The berry plants don't need the competition for light and water. You don't need them blocking your view of the berries. When the berries start turning white (that color they turn between green and red) we know harvest time is getting close!
Strawberry Season here at Meuer Farm is busy each June. The skies are blue (mostly), the fields are green and the berries are red! You can visit our fields to pick your own berries of you can call ahead so we can pick the berries for you. We do our best to have quarts available for people just stopping by (some days we can't pick the berries fast enough). We offer 6 different varieties of strawberries: Flavorfest (sugary sweet), Brunswick (dark & round), L'Amour (light red and cone-shaped), Cabot (huge in size and flavor), Sonata (late and dark red) and Cavendish (dark red and white). Each of these berries has it's own unique flavor. Tell us how you'll be using your berries and we'll tell you the best ones to pick!
While you visit, enjoy our "Berry Tram". Step on at the building and step off on the edge of the strawberry field. When you're done picking your berries, place your box on the "Berry Tram" and enjoy the ride around the field and back to the building. Out in the field you can enjoy the sun, meet new friends and even learn a few things about strawberries from Farmer Dave. He's always walking through the field. We think he's talking to the berries...
